I was once asked about other movies similar to The Matrix movies. And so I have put together a list of these six movies. There are many out there, indeed. But, these candidates below deserve attention, and all of them have a comparable yet different concepts, I think.

Dark City

(1998)

A theme quite like the Matrix. Reality is not what it seems, however, the story takes us a bit further into space than The Matrix ever dared. Generally considered a pearl. Unique story, encaptivating settings, and amazing visuals.

The 13th Floor

(1999)

1999 was the year of simulation fantasies. Again a concept not unlike what we saw in The Matrix, but it dares to push the idea of simulations and simulation theory to the max. Not quite on the production-level of some of the movies mentioned here, but the story is never dull, and it certainly provokes and stays in your mind long after watching it. Was steamrolled by The Matrix that came out the same year - and that is not fair.

(1999)

A simulated world is not always a secret ploy govern by higher powers, sometimes it is an intentional choice or preference. This movie explores such ideas mixed with our lust for entertainment, thrills, revenge, and all the other things we are told are bad. A unique movie, even among these candidates.

Equilibrium

(2002)

A very Matrix-style action movie, with a clear critique of society. Does what the Matrix did, just without a simulation idea. Strangely underrated, as it is a bang of an action movie, done very well.

EQUILIBRIUM

Strange Days

(1995)

Explorer memories as a commodity and in doing so, it invites in different realities, or views on realities. A Blade Runner inspired type universe and to some extent even story.

(2011)

Chase-detective-science-fiction story with a twist making it otherworldly, literally. I consider it Matrix-styled, as it provokes simulation concepts and alternate realities. It dares to ultimately beg the awe-inspiring question; if the last reality is the real one. And if it matters?
